Kari (Mueller) Pekar, a former University of Iowa volleyball player, passed away on June 10, 2026, following a courageous battle with cancer. She was 33 years old. Her death has been met with an outpouring of grief from family, friends, former teammates, coaches, and the Hawkeye community.
A native of Iowa City, Pekar starred at Iowa City High School, where she became the school’s all-time leader in career digs and earned all-state honors as a senior. She continued her volleyball career at the University of Iowa, competing for the Hawkeyes from 2011 to 2014. During her collegiate career, she appeared in 93 matches, making 17 starts while recording 357 digs, 33 assists, and 17 service aces.
After graduating from Iowa in 2015 with a degree in health and human physiology, Kari pursued a career in healthcare. She earned a nursing degree from Kirkwood Community College in 2018 and dedicated herself to caring for others, reflecting the compassion and determination that defined her life.
In 2022, Kari married former Iowa football tight end Peter Pekar, beginning a new chapter of her life surrounded by family and friends. Throughout her illness, she was remembered for her resilience, courage, and unwavering positivity.
Following news of her passing, the University of Iowa Athletics Department paid tribute to Kari, honoring her contributions to the volleyball program and remembering her as a valued member of the Hawkeye family whose legacy extends far beyond the court.
A celebration of Kari Pekar’s life was scheduled for Thursday, July 30, 2026, in Brookfield, Wisconsin.
